Suitcases are a form of travel bag they have come a long way and were actually the replacement for trunks which had been popular since the 1700's. When the first suitcases came out they were made from leather and consequently lighter than their wooden counterparts. Since then plastic, vinyl, fabric and metal have all been used in the construction. Nowadays Polycarbon, Ballistic Nylon, EVA and Polyester are the favoured materials that suitcases are made from. The original suitcases were carried by hand with some form of top handle, many also had locks to secure them. These 2 features have continued into todays models along with a whole host of new features such as internal pockets and suit sleeves. The biggest change to suitcases was the introduction of wheels, which introduced the name trolley cases that some manufacturers use to describe their wheeled suitcases. Wheels made a huge difference in the ease of transporting your belongings, now 4 wheel suitcases or spinners are the ultimate in effort free luggage. More recently as airlines clamp down on excess baggage lightweight suitcases are the trend for regular holiday makers as they try to stay below their 20kg maximum. This has led to lighter weight materials being used and stripped down interiors without all the internal extras that were popular in the last few decades. Business travellers still want all these extras and this has led to a diversifying market with some brands concentrating on lightweight cases such as Antler Luggage and Titan Luggage. Whilst other brands such as Victorinox Luggage concentrate on the business travellers. World famous luggage brand Samsonite perhaps have both markets covered.
